Deaf Education Information from the Clerc Center About Hearing Loss
To understand the types and causes of hearing loss, it is helpful to understand the basic components of the ear. The ear is divided into three main parts: the outer ear, the middle ear, and the inner ear.
Outer Ear: The outside of the ear, plus the ear canal up to the eardrum or tympanic membrane.
Middle Ear: The cavity behind the tympanic membrane which houses three small bones that help conduct sound waves to the inner ear.
Inner Ear: The cavity behind the middle ear houses a series of channels known as the labyrinth,
The Clerc Center has a Congressional mandate to develop programs and products for improving the quality of education of deaf and hard of hearing students from preschool through high school. Together with its two demonstration schools, Kendall Elementary School and the Model Secondary School for the Deaf, the Clerc Center works with schools and programs across the country to meet the needs of students in three critical areas: literacy, family involvement, and transition from school to career.

What Can Go Wrong
There are several ways in which we can describe a hearing
impairment. The most basic description of hearing loss is by
degree. Classification by degree may be done according to
functioning level, deaf and hard of hearing, or it may be
described in terms of measured hearing loss, such as mild,
moderate, severe, or profound.

Vitamin B12 Sheathes Ear Nerves
When it comes to nerves, vitamin B12 plays a special role. The body needs this nutrient to manufacture myelin, the fatty sheath that wraps around nerve fibers, insulating them and allowing them to conduct their electrical impulses normally.
A vitamin B12 deficiency can raise blood levels of homocysteine, an amino acid that is thought to be toxic to nerves. Low levels of B12 have been linked to a number of nervous system disorders, including memory loss, decreased reflexes, impaired touch or pain perception--and,< apparently, tinnitus and noise-induced hearing loss.
Researchers from the Institute for Noise Hazards Research and Evoked Potentials Laboratory at Chaim-Sheba Medical Center in Ramat Gan and from Tel Aviv University, both in Israel, looked at a group of 385 people with tinnitus and found that 36 to 47 percent suffered from vitamin B12 deficiency.
